From a discussion with the late Paddy Whyte, Stamullen. on 8th April 1997 – R. Duffy
St. Patrick’s G.F.C. was formed in January 1951 by the amalgamation of the two local junior clubs – Stamullen and Julianstown. The Julianstown colours were green and the Stamullen colours were black and white. The new club, now called St. Patrick’s GFC, chose green and white as its colours. The green represented Julianstown and the white represented Stamullen.
Early championship successes of the old clubs were very few. Stamullen were Senior Champions in 1900 (Meath GAA website claims that there was “no championship” in 1900). My understanding is that Stamullen was the only team entered and therefore claimed the title) and Julianstown were Senior Champions in 1889 and Junior Champions in 1902. A photograph exists of the 1902 team.
It appears to have been taken at the Moorechurch Cemetery wall. Julianstown did have some underage success winning the Meath Minor Championship in 1947, 1948 and 1949. It was because of the lack of any real impact at championship level that the amalgamation of the two clubs took place. In Paddy Whyte’s own words, “neither team could win very much on their own. They met often in ‘friendlies’ which were anything but friendlies. Usually the game ended in a row, which it is fair to say, always ended when all left the field.”
